Liberty Canzater, the president and founder of The Butterfly Foundation (TBF) and Monarch Café of Spartanburg LLC. The mission of TBF is to empower, transform and transition the lives of economically challenged individuals and families to become self-sufficient and self-confident citizens. In 2009 TBF began providing permanent housing and supportive services to chronically homeless individuals and families with disabilities in Spartanburg, Greenville and Anderson Counties. In the fall of 2010, the Culinary Job Training Program designed to prepare the unemployed, underemployed, homeless and previously incarcerated adults for a career in the food service industry. 160 individuals successfully completed this 15 week program and maintained an 88% job placement rate among its participants.
January 2023 Monarch Café officially opened as the only commissary kitchen with a pop-up restaurant component in the Upstate. This innovative concept allows food producers, caterers, food truck owners, etc. hourly and daily rentable, DHEC approved commercial kitchen space to prepare and sell food. The pop-up restaurant allows food entrepreneurs the space to provide a full-service restaurant atmosphere to their current and potential customers without the full responsibility and cost of maintaining a commercial facility. In addition, entrepreneurial training will be provided to assist in developing sustainable and economically sound business models.
Education – Liberty received her Master of Business Administration degree from Webster University. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of South Carolina, Columbia SC, and obtained an Associate Degree in Fashion Design from the American College of Applied Arts, London England. Professional trainings and development courses through NeighborWorks Training Institutes held in various locations throughout the country. In December 2013 completed the requirements of the South Carolina Diversity Leaders Initiative through the Riley Institute at Furman University. Liberty was named Spartanburg Chamber 2015 Minority Business Owner of the Year; Spartanburg Methodist College awarded Liberty with the 2016 Pioneering Women Award in Community Outreach. 2017 Excellence in Public Infrastructure by The National Development Council. She received the 2019 Black Girls Rock award from the Live, Love, Laugh Experience.
Personal – Liberty is currently married 23yrs to Gregory Canzater and has a 14 year old daughter Zoey and a 36 year old stepson, Jamal.
